THE WORST EXPERIENCE I HAVE EVER HAD IN A RESTAURANT.
We arrived and were greeted by the host, a man with a chef's white jacket and shorts with a ponytail. He was friendly and seemed quite welcoming. Then our waitress came to tell us about the specials and took drink orders. All seemed well. House red wine from Joseph's was very average. Ordered calamari appetizer (a special that evening) and our entrees. The appetizer and a basket of bread and flat bread with herb oil arrived fairly quickly. We sat for quite some time with the empty appetizer plate before the host finally came over and asked if he could take the plate. OK, seems fine, but honestly the restaurant was not so busy that we should have to sit with the empty plate for more than a few minutes. The rest of the dinner went downhill rapidly and (coincidentally?) the host stopped coming by to ask how we were enjoying our meal. We noticed as we sat that there was a distinct smoky smell pumping into the restaurant. They have a wood fired pizza oven, so a certain amount of smoke would be understandable, however my mother ended up sitting with her eyes closed. When I asked, she said that her eyes were starting to hurt from the smoke. At one point, the waitress came to our table and complained about the smoke to us and said she was having trouble seeing because of it. Why she felt the need to share this with us, I do not know. My husband figures they had not cleaned their chimney for a long time. Well more time passed, even more smoke was noticeable. Eventually you could literally see the smoke all over the restaurant. My husband's entree arrived - the pasta special (seafood penne), and he said it was good. Then there was quite a long delay before the waitress brought out my entree (smoked salmon pizza) along with another pizza. The waitress explained that they had made the wrong pizza - my mom and my son had ordered a Canadian pizza, the pizza they brought was grilled chicken. She did explain that a new pizza (Canadian this time) was in the oven. My mom and son decided they wanted to wait for the new pizza. My pizza was almost cold. As time passed my son started to get upset. The smoke was bothering him and he was very hungry, clearly he was not doing well with this long wait and the conditions in the room. Eventually the Canadian pizza arrived. My mom commented that it was nice and hot, but the meat was extremely salty. My son only had a few bites and also had a few bites of my husband's pasta. Well, then things really went into disaster mode, my son started to feel unwell. He got up with my husband and they tried to get to the washroom but, unfortunately, my son got sick just before he got there. This is where the serious problems began! My husband was doing his best trying to help my son and clean up the mess. Someone had given him a cloth towel and some paper towels and a white garbage bag. Then the waitress with eye problems came to to our table and told me that my son had gotten sick and in the most unprofessional tone said 'And I walked right through it.' It seemed from that point on, that the people working there felt the need to treat me as if I had intentionally brought my son to their restaurant to be ill. They showed no concern at all for my son. My husband came to the table after a few more minutes to ask me to help, so we both went back towards the washroom to clean up. Absolutely nobody was helping or doing much of anything other than complaining about what was going on. Both he and I asked for a mop or something to clean up properly, but the older woman behind the bar told us "the mop is just for the kitchen". She pointed to a large roll of brown commercial paper towel and a bottle of Windex sitting on the bar. So, at this point I am asking myself how do they NORMALLY clean the floors and washroom in this place, if the mop is "just for the kitchen"???? This woman also proceeded to tell me that all of the people working there were looking after their guests. Clearly from her attitude we were no longer being considered 'their guests'. And so there my husband and I were, left completely to ourselves cleaning up this terrible mess with non absorbent paper towels and Windex. I certainly do not mind trying to clean up a mess that is entirely due to my son, however trying to clean up with what we were provided was just awful...in fact, totally disgusting!!! When I got to the point that I felt I had done as much as I could without crawling on my hands and knees, or going further into the men's washroom (where my husband was taking care of things), I walked towards the front and grabbed my purse from the table. Thankfully we had already paid the bill, so we could leave immediately. I told the 'host' on my way out that we would never be back. He quickly got very upset (I would actually describe it that he went into a tantrum ) and then accused me of bringing a sick child to his restaurant. I told him that my son was not sick before he got there. He followed me out the door and continued to yell at me. And not only that, the older woman (presumably his mother) came outside to yell at me as well. Totally and completely unprofessional!!! The 'host' ended the confrontation by telling me to never darken his doorway again.
I would highly recommend that you go ANYWHERE else but here. I have never experienced such unprofessional behaviour, nor seen such disgusting conditions - smoke filling the restaurant and being forced to clean up such a mess with paper towels and Windex?? NO THANKS!
